Yeast Infection? Maybe, Maybe Not
Are there other types of vaginal yeast infections?
Yes there are, and that’s why proper diagnosis is important. Incorrect self-diagnosis can lead to many problems, from delayed symptom relief to more serious complications.

Because some yeast infection treatments are sold over the counter, women often assume they have a yeast infection and skip evaluation by a healthcare provider. Yeast infections are NOT the most common form of vaginitis, so it is possible that you have something else. A lack of proper treatment of bacterial vaginosis or trichomonas can even lead to more serious complications. That’s why it is so important to be properly evaluated by your healthcare provider so you get the medication you need both to relieve your symptoms and to avoid any serious consequences.

Two other common types of vaginal infections are:
Bacterial Vaginosis Trichomonas
Bacterial vaginosis results from a
disruption in the balance of bacteria
naturally found in the vagina. You
might experience increased discharge,
a thick, milky, yellowish discharge, or
a fishy smell that gets worse after
sex. Itching is less common than in
yeast infections, and about 50% of
women have no symptoms at all.
Bacterial vaginosis is more serious
than a yeast infection, because it has
been linked to pelvic inflammatory
disease (PID), endometriosis, and
urinary tract infections. In pregnant
women, bacterial vaginosis has been
associated with delivery complications.
Bacterial vaginosis is different from a
yeast infection, so you’d need a
different type of prescription from your
healthcare provider.
Unlike yeast infections and bacterial
vaginosis, trichomonas is a sexually
transmitted disease (STD) caused by a
parasite. Someone can have it and not
even know because 50% of women and
90% of men have no symptoms at all.
When symptoms do occur, they include
itching, yellowish/greenish or gray
foamy discharge, abdominal pain, or
painful sex and urination. Women with
trichomonas are at an increased risk for
HIV transmission and for pelvic
infections, which can lead to infertility. It
is often accompanied by another STD.
